Essay

This dissertation is an empirical quantitative inquiry into the cumulative effects of social stress on psychological and physiological health. The range of social factors that can act as chronic stressors and affect individual health directly or indirectly thus maintaining the existing health disparities between groups is reviewed. A set of relevant theoretical frameworks from different disciplines are reviewed in order to more adequately account for the mechanisms by which social stress affects health outcomes in individuals and groups, emphasizing the importance of social perception and subjective stress, as well as moderated/mediated relationships in the proposed model. The evidence for the proposed mechanism of the effects of collective culture-individual lifestyle incongruence on stress levels and self-rated health is presented. The causal pathways of childhood circumstances on lifestyle and health behavior in adulthood are empirically assessed. The submitted research also showcases the methodological options available to stress researchers to improve the informativeness of the results of measuring the impact of sociocultural and socioeconomic stressors on health, especially using the techniques of multidimensional analysis and quantitatively-driven cognitive ethnography.
