The dissertation addresses the history and organization of book collections of 12 Catholic monasteries of the Lutsk/Lutsk-Zhytomyr diocese, which belonged to five monastic orders: The Jesuit Order (Lutsk, Ostroh, Berestey, Kremenets Collegiums), the Trinitarian Order (Lutsk, Berestey, Theofipol monasteries), the Discalced Carmelite Order (Berdychiv, Vyshnivets monasteries), the Reformed Order (Dederkal, Kremenets monasteries), the Capuchin Order (Ostroh monastery). The important role of libraries in the history of society development, including the history of the Church, the lack of research into the stated scholarly topic by Ukrainian and foreign researchers, the elimination of the topic of the book culture of Catholic monasteries in ethnic Ukrainian lands in historical, library and cultural studies determine its relevance. The chronological framework of the study covers the 17th–19th century: from the time of the emergence of order cells on the territory of the Lutsk/Lutsk-Zhytomyr diocese in the context of the Counter-Reformation movement within the ranks of the Roman Catholic Church and until the cessation of their activities in connection with the abolition of the Society of Jesus in 1773 and three divisions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The geographical area of the study is determined by the administrative-territorial borders of the Lutsk/Lutsk-Zhytomyr diocese (1798–1925). The work reconstructs the history of the studied book collections in the context of the history of their monasteries, outlines the main stages of their history, highlights the organization of monastery libraries, the rules of their work, sources of collections, the principles of bibliographic processing of literature, presents a bibliographic analysis of the composition and contents of library collections, and presents their bibliometric characteristics; the fate of the book collections after the closure of the monasteries is traced. The dissertation is based on a solid source base, which includes documents stored in 4 archives and 3 libraries, and over 7.800 old prints of the studied book collections, which are now stored in 7 libraries and 4 museums in Ukraine and abroad. The work demonstrates the importance of an integrated approach in historical and library research, (including monastery book collections), which not only increases the scholarly level of research, but also brings historical library science into interdisciplinary relations with other branches of historical studies and humanities. The dissertation study elucidates the role and significance of provenances in highlighting the acquisition and organization of monastery book collections, demonstrates their primary role in determining the relevance of books to specific libraries, records the ways in which books entered the collections and the facts of moving copies from one monastery to another, and presents information about the distribution and employment of works written by spiritual authors. Based on factual material, aspects of the book culture that prevailed in the Catholic monasteries of the Lutsk/Lutsk-Zhytomyr diocese in the 17th – 19th centuries are highlighted (using the example of the libraries studied), it is stated that this book culture had the same features as other Catholic monasteries in the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The results of the library research have shown that the studied libraries are historical and cultural landmarks of the Counter-Reformation era in the ethnic Ukrainian lands of the 17th–18th centuries, therefore these old prints should be included in the State Register of Book Monuments of Ukraine.
