The dissertation is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of English-language occult discourse, with a particular focus on identifying its ontological, epistemological, and axiological features. The study traces the evolution of public thought concerning the phenomenon of occultism; refines a methodology for the comprehensive analysis of English occult discourse; characterizes its semiotic features and the verbal and visual means of actualizing occult symbolism; reveals the genre-specific and pragmatic features of English occult discourse in the ontological dimension; identifies the linguistic and speech realization of the megaconcept OCCULTISM and its core macroconcepts – ALCHEMY, ASTROLOGY, and MAGIC – and presents a model of their structure within the epistemological aspect of the research; outlines the axiological characteristics of English occult discourse; introduces a new field within the cognitive-communicative scientific paradigm – linguistic occultology, which investigates the linguistic means, textual structures, cognitive mechanisms, and communicative strategies inherent in occult discourse. Within this field, further research may be conducted in the context of linguo-personology, contrastive linguistics, psycholinguistics, and other interdisciplinary areas. The phenomenon of occultism, rooted in an archaic and irrational mode of world perception, has evolved under the influence of philosophical-religious and scientific doctrines. In the contemporary era, the term occultism encompasses various individualized esoteric practices which, through the globalized space of mass media and the internet, are being transformed into a mass and commercialized phenomenon. Occult discourse represents a cognitive-communicative activity based on magical, alchemical, and astrological beliefs and convictions regarding their influence on human life, the achievement of changes in the environment considered desirable and necessary by communicants, and the pursuit of a high level of self-sufficiency and life renewal on one’s own terms, by expanding the possibilities of individuals and the world. The genre varieties of occult discourse share a common foundation and function as a cognitive-communicative system that integrates a particular worldview and ways of understanding reality, while utilizing expressive communicative tools within specific spatial and temporal contexts. The semiotic system of occult discourse is inherently multi-coded; nonverbal signs (icons and symbols) in combination with verbal components—particularly specialized terminology, metaphorical expressions, and syntactic constructions – convey layers of meaning and harmonize the rational and the irrational within a unified cognitive-communicative system. Occult discourse performs a range of pragmatic functions – including prognostic, protective, regulative, corrective, cautionary, emotive-evaluative, and entertaining – which are collectively realized in acts of communication. These functions provide essential insights into the communicants' intentions, phatic purposes, and emotional-evaluative states. The conceptual dominants of occult discourse are represented by a system of mental units that encompasses the megaconcept OCCULTISM and the macroconcepts ALCHEMY, ASTROLOGY, and MAGIC, each of which actualizes the thematic and functional specificity of this communicative domain. In the English-speaking world, attitudes toward occultism are ambivalent, as evidenced by the use of lexical units with inherently positive and negative connotations, contextual juxtaposition of opposites, lexemes expressing intense emotions or feelings, as well as morphological explicators of the meaning ambiguous or contradictory.
