Essay

The dissertation reveals and comprehensively characterizes historical and pedagogical studies of domestic scholars on the development of physical education of children and youth in Ukraine in the second half of the 19th – 20th century. The theoretical and methodological foundations of the research are substantiated. It has been established that the theory and practice of physical education of children and youth in Ukraine in the second half of the 19th – 20th centuries within the national pedagogical discourse has not previously been studied as a separate historical and pedagogical problem. To solve it, a complex of scientific approaches was applied: general scientific (paradigmatic, systemic, synergetic, cultural, axiological) and specific scientific (historiographical, hermeneutic, historical reconstruction of pedagogical knowledge, historical-national); principles (historicism, unity of historical and logical, objectivity and comprehensiveness, integrity, continuity and succession, interdisciplinarity); methods (general scientific and historical-pedagogical). The source base of the research includes: documents regulating the education system and determining the peculiarities of the development of physical education of children and youth during the studied period (by-laws, normative legal acts depending on issuing authorities, etc.); archival documents; works of public figures and educators of the second half of the 19th – 20th centuries addressing issues of physical education; monographs and dissertations as key sources for reconstructing the historiographical process of accumulating scientific knowledge on theoretical and practical aspects of physical education; didactic sources (manuals, textbooks, curricula, plans); generalizing works revealing the genesis of physical education in Ukraine; collective publications; periodicals. The analyzed works were systematized according to three main approaches: chronological, problem-thematic, and personalized. The periodization of the development of historical and pedagogical studies of the theory and practice of physical education of children and youth in Ukraine during the studied period has been carried out, identifying four main periods: formation (second half of the 19th century – 1917); interwar (1918–1930s); totalitarian (1940s–1980s); modernization-pluralistic (1991 – early 21st century). Each of these periods has significant differences in approaches to historical and pedagogical discourse, content, and research directions regarding various theoretical and practical aspects of physical education development, determined by socio-economic, socio-political, and socio-cultural realities of the respective times. The analysis of educational paradigms characteristic of these periods is of particular importance, as their transformation influenced the scientific inquiries of researchers. The features of the accumulation of scientific knowledge on the development of physical education of children and youth are characterized, and studies on specific areas of physical education are analyzed. The analysis of the state of scientific development shows a progressive accumulation of knowledge on the theory and practice of physical education of children and youth in Ukraine from the mid-19th century to the early 21st century. The collective scholarly work outlines key approaches and a general model for studying physical education in the specified period. The studies of domestic scholars devoted to the educational activity and creative heritage of pedagogical figures who made significant contributions to the development of physical education are summarized. A number of works have been identified that characterize the contribution of educators to the development of physical education and analyze their role in the formation and development of the national system of physical education; these works contain substantial factual material on the place of physical education in their creative heritage. Historical and pedagogical reflections on the formation and development of professional training of physical education teachers are revealed. It has been established that the modernization-pluralistic period is the most productive in terms of the number of works devoted to the history of professional pedagogical training of physical education teachers in the second half of the 19th – 20th centuries, which allows us to assert that modern Ukrainian scholars have made a significant contribution to the study of this problem.
