The study provides a comprehensive and systematically structured analysis of Ukrainian historiography on higher education in foreign countries from the 1990 s to the first quarter of the 21 st century. It substantiates the multidimensional, polystructural, and interdisciplinary nature of this field and emphasizes its growing importance in the context of Ukraine’s integration into the European Higher Education Area and post-war modernization of the national higher education system. The subject is defined as the methodology, stages, directions, and trends in Ukrainian historiography of foreign higher education, while the aim is to identify patterns of its development and determine ways of applying accumulated scholarly experience to educational reform and comparative studies. The research methodology is an integrated multi-component system consisting of five elements: interdisciplinarity, ensuring the integration of pedagogical, philosophical, sociological, economic, legal, and managerial approaches; the terminological system approach, addressing variability of key concepts across Ukrainian, post-Soviet, and Western discourses; the systematization of scientific principles and approaches, combining general scientific (civilizational, historical-pedagogical, cultural, synergetic, axiological) and instrumental (paradigmatic, anthropological, phenomenological, hermeneutic, differentiated) frameworks; a set of research methods, including historiographical, meta-analytical, statistical, and sociological tools; and the principle of pluralism in scientific discourse, enabling interpretation of historiographical processes from multiple perspectives. The source base includes over 3,500 scholarly works, of which about 1,340 were analyzed, including monographs, dissertations, articles, conference proceedings, textbooks, reference publications, and foreign studies. This corpus enabled identification of key patterns in Ukrainian historiography of foreign higher education. A three-stage periodization is proposed: the post-Soviet stage (1991 – 2000/2001), marked by rejection of ideologically biased interpretations; the pro-European stage (2002 – 2009/2010), associated with the Bologna Process and focus on European models; and the globalist stage (2011 – 2025), characterized by expanded geographical and thematic research. A two-vector analytical model is introduced, combining territorial-spatial and content dimensions for systematic classification of historiographical research. Meta-analysis reveals increasing complexity of research on higher professional education abroad, expansion of country-specific studies (including Asian regions), and diversification of thematic areas. It highlights the dominance of the competence-based paradigm, growing attention to distance education and digitalization, and the strengthening of research activity in universities. The study examines interdisciplinary discourse on public policy, governance, reform, and quality assurance in higher education, which peaked during the pro-European stage and is now characterized by integration of macro-, meso-, and micro-level analyses. Quality assurance is interpreted as a multidimensional phenomenon covering institutional performance, compliance with international standards, and labor market relevance. The findings confirm significant progress in Ukrainian comparative studies, including expansion of the source base, methodological development, and integration into the global academic space. The study emphasizes critical adaptation of foreign educational experience rather than mechanical transfer, considering national socio-cultural contexts. It outlines prospects for further research, including geographical expansion, harmonization of terminology, and engagement with Western methodologies. The practical significance is demonstrated through the development of an elective course «Foreign Higher Education in Contemporary Ukrainian Historiography», contributing to methodological culture and research competencies of higher education students.
