The relevance of the study is determined by the insufficient coverage of the main characteristics of discourse in linguistics, as well as the existence of numerous debatable aspects that require further analysis. At the same time, identifying the key features of the notion under study holds significant theoretical and practical value, contributing both to the deepening of scholarly understanding of this linguistic category and to the improvement of practical approaches to its examination. The aim of this study is to explore and analyze linguists’ views on the key characteristics of discourse in the linguistic scholarship of the late XXth and early XXIst centuries. The source base of the research consists of a collection of scientific works that analyze discourse, specifically the major works of scholars who have significantly influenced the development of discourse theory. The scientific novelty of the dissertation is determined by the fact that it provides a detailed presentation of the main characteristics of discourse in linguistics at the end of the XXth and the beginning of the XXIst centuries from a linguo-historiographical perspective. The theoretical significance of the work lies in the development of a methodology for analyzing the key characteristics of discourse in linguistics of the late XXth and early XXIst centuries. The use of a substantial body of empirical material necessitates the creation of a systematization method that combines both chronological and conceptual approaches. Each concept is examined in terms of the innovations introduced by linguists compared to their predecessors, as well as the relevance of their contributions to solving current issues of discourse in linguistic studies. The practical significance of the work lies in the fact that the materials of the dissertation will contribute to resolving methodological issues related to the study of discourse in linguistics at the turn of the XXth and XXIst centuries, as well as improving the courses of linguistic disciplines in higher education institutions of Ukraine. The results of this research can be applied in teaching courses on the history of linguistic thought, introduction to linguistics, and general linguistics at philological faculties, as well as in cultural and educational activities.
