The dissertation is devoted to the study of football discourse genres, their communicative organization and means of realization in English and Ukrainian, approached from the standpoint of linguistic genology, communicative linguistics and linguistic pragmatics. The relevance of the dissertation research is determined by changes in linguistic scientific approaches in the second half of the 20th century, the growing interest in language functioning within the sphere of mass communication, as well as the development of new information technologies in the early 21st century. In this context, football and football-related events, which combine national specificity and global scope, create an informational and communicative space within which genres function, each with their own communicative characteristics. The object of the study is the genres of football discourse as categories of communication, while the subject is the communicative-pragmatic organization and the lexico-grammatical and syntactic means of realizing the communicative intent of the addresser in English- and Ukrainian-language football discourse genres. The dissertation defines the genre-specific nature of football discourse with consideration of the communication channel, identifies the genres most actively used by members of the discursive community, and provides their pragmatic characterization. It also analyzes the similarities and differences in the means of realization in English and Ukrainian. To achieve this goal, a number of tasks were carried out: the theoretical foundations for studying football discourse genres within modern linguistic genre theory were defined; the status of football discourse in the typology of discourses was clarified; the position of the selected genres within the system of electronic media genres was determined; and a methodology for comparing football discourse genres in English and Ukrainian was proposed. The study also outlines the communicative-pragmatic features of genre organization, compares the linguistic means of their realization, and identifies general patterns and differences in the organization and implementation of football discourse genres in both languages.
