Essay

The dissertation examines the processes of transformation of the symphony genre in the context of dramaturgical and stylistic changes in music. Addressing this topic involves analysing the relationship between an artistic concept and its realization in an adequate dramatic form, as well as the correlation between established genre conventions and the pursuit of creating an original work that corresponds to new realities, contemporary means of expression, and a transformed sensory sphere. These factors have necessitated the application of a broad interdisciplinary approach to the analysis and study of transformational processes within the symphonic genre. The relevance of the research is determined by a complex of theoretical and creative-practical factors associated with the need to comprehend the evolutionary processes in the development of the symphonic genre. Based on analytical studies of symphonic works by leading world composers and contemporary Ukrainian authors, an attempt is made to identify the regularities in the influence of artistic principles of symphonism on the dramaturgical organization of musical material, as well as on the formation of individual stylistic characteristics of a composer’s musical language. The investigation of the multidimensional dynamics of the symphony’s development contributes to a deeper understanding of its role in shaping the artistic worldview and makes it possible to define the leading trends in the transformation of traditional symphonic models within the context of contemporary musical thinking. Particular attention is devoted to studying the specificity of the evolution of the symphony genre in contemporary Ukrainian compositional practice, which still remains insufficiently explored within national musicology. The systematization, analytical interpretation, performance realization, and scholarly edition of Ukrainian symphonic works constitute an important scientific task aimed at the preservation, representation, and promotion of national musical heritage within the context of world culture. The aim of this research is to identify the specific regularities and artistic-stylistic parameters of the transformation of the symphony genre in the context of dramaturgical, structural, and semantic changes in contemporary musical art. Special attention is given to analysing the latest trends in the development of the symphony genre, shaped by a reorientation of the artistic paradigm, the evolution of compositional thinking, and the influence of current processes within contemporary cultural discourse, particularly in Ukrainian musical practice. The methodological framework of the study is based on the fundamental principles of modern historical and theoretical musicology. Its core is a comprehensive approach that integrates various research methods, among which musical-textological analysis plays a central role in identifying genre, dramaturgical, and stylistic features of the symphony. The primary method used in the dissertation is musical-textological analysis, which enables an in-depth examination of the internal stylistic structure of symphonic works, their semantic content, and features of the musical language. Equally important is the complex-system approach, which considers a musical work as part of a broader cultural context, making it possible to trace its interconnections with various artistic traditions. Significant attention is given to the historical method, which allows one to explore the evolution of the symphony genre in the context of the general development of musical art. The interdisciplinary approach makes it possible to consider the interaction of symphonic music with other spheres of culture, which contributes to a deeper understanding of its transformational processes. When presenting the material, the typological method is applied, oriented towards analysing stylistic and constructive techniques of compositional craft that shape contemporary symphonism.
