The relevance of the study is determined by the fundamental changes that have occurred in the Ukrainian opera theater during the years of Ukraine’s independence. After 1991, national culture gained new opportunities for self-expression while simultaneously facing the challenges of integration into the global cultural space. The national opera landscape of the Independence era combined two interrelated components: an academic dimension—the activities of traditional opera institutions (national academic opera and ballet theaters) focused on the classical heritage—and an experimental layer—the emergence of innovative projects and creative explorations that fundamentally challenged established genre conventions. Over more than three decades of state independence, original phenomena have developed in Ukraine in the field of opera directing, including innovative formats such as Open Opera Ukraine, Nova Opera, and Opera Aperta. The incorporation of digital technologies into the stage space of opera performances has become established, while neo-folkloric, cross-genre, and multimedia forms of staging have developed rapidly, significantly expanding the artistic and aesthetic range of contemporary national opera art. At the same time, despite the rapid transformation of directing strategies and growing interest in interdisciplinary approaches, there are currently no comprehensive scholarly studies that systematically cover these processes in the contemporary Ukrainian musical-theatrical space. The insufficient coverage of this issue in the art-studies11
literature, along with the urgent need to understand the development paths of the Ukrainian opera theater under modern conditions, determined the choice of this dissertation topic.
Aim of the Study. The aim of the study is to conduct a comprehensive scholarly analysis of the Ukrainian opera theater of the Independence period (1991–2025) in its academic and experimental dimensions, identifying the
characteristic features, main trends, and innovative artistic practices in the genre’s development.
Object of the Study. The object of the research is the Ukrainian opera theater of the Independence period as a holistic phenomenon of musical-theatrical culture. This includes the activities of national academic and youth opera centers, as well as the latest experimental opera projects in Ukraine during 1991–2025.
Subject of the Study. The subject of the research is the combination of academic traditions and innovations in the development of the Ukrainian opera theater during the independence period, along with their artistic manifestations, interaction, and influence on the evolution of the opera genre in the national and
global cultural context.
In the Conclusions, the main results of the study are summarized. It is demonstrated that contemporary Ukrainian opera art is developing through a synergy of classical traditions and innovative explorations. The coexistence of academic opera institutions and independent creative projects does not represent opposition but rather mutual complementarity, forming an integrated national opera space. Novel artistic explorations (postmodern aesthetics,
cross-genre synthesis, digital scenography, etc.) significantly transform the opera genre, expanding its forms and attracting a wider audience, while relying on the deep foundation of the classical opera heritage. Thus, the Ukrainian opera theater of the Independence period is characterized by a dialectical combination of academism and experimentation, which ensures its dynamic development. Stage innovations enrich opera with new forms of expression, educational models (opera studios) ensure the training of versatile performers, and global cultural initiatives and international collaboration facilitate the integration of national opera art into the worldwide context.
