Essay

This dissertation is the first attempt in Ukrainian literary studies at a comprehensive analysis of the writings of the Anglo-American author Christopher Isherwood. The research aims to outline the specifics of construction and functioning of the discourse of loneliness as a modernist phenomenon in Isherwood’s fiction. The relevance of the study is determined by a complex of interrelated factors. First, in today’s globalised and mobile world, loneliness is becoming increasingly problematic, one of the defining aspects of the modern human condition, revealing one’s painful rupture with the Other, and even more so, with oneself. Consequently, there is a need for a detailed investigation into the nature and history of the phenomenon of loneliness, in particular, its representation in fiction, which dualistically records both the external changes of ideological matrices and the internal personality dynamics.
