Essay

The dissertation, based on the analysis of domestic and foreign experience in foreign language and primary education, as well as the principles of social and emotional learning (SEL/SEEL), provides a theoretical substantiation and experimental verification of a system of exercises aimed at developing foreign language communicative competence of primary school students in English lessons. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the theoretical substantiation of a system of exercises using social and emotional learning tools and the development of a model for its implementation in the primary school educational process. The concepts of “foreign language communicative competence” and “foreign language communicative competence of primary school students” have been clarified; the forms and methods of its development have been improved; the component structure and formation criteria have been specified; and diagnostic tools and educational and methodological support have been further developed. The practical significance of the research lies in improving English language training for primary school students through the implementation of a system of exercises, the interactive lotto game “Interhraiko,” CardBox cards, the Happy English mobile application, and adapted Cambridge Young Learners English materials. In the theoretical section of the study, foreign language communicative competence is defined as a combination of linguistic, general, and intercultural competences that ensure effective command of a foreign language. Foreign language communicative competence of primary school students is interpreted as the ability to communicate effectively in English in everyday, educational, social, and cultural environments in accordance with the norms of intercultural interaction. The structure of the competence includes motivational, cognitive, communicative-activity, and reflective-evaluative components. The study analyzes international and Ukrainian experience in implementing social and emotional learning in education. Particular attention is paid to the SEL and SEEL programs, as well as the activities of EdCamp Ukraine aimed at introducing SEL into Ukrainian primary education. The research findings confirmed the positive impact of social and emotional learning on students’ development and the educational environment, especially under wartime conditions. The dissertation substantiates a system of exercises for developing foreign language communicative competence through social and emotional learning, designs a model for its implementation, and develops educational and methodological support. The model includes target, analytical, technological, and diagnostic blocks. The educational tools comprise interactive games, a mobile application, and adapted testing materials. Questionnaires, testing, and the survey “Me and the English Language” were used to determine the levels of foreign language communicative competence formation. The results of the ascertaining stage revealed an insufficient level of competence formation among students in both control and experimental groups. During the formative stage, students of the experimental groups performed exercises aimed at developing speech skills and social-emotional abilities, including self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, interaction with others, and responsible decision-making. The exercises were integrated into the interactive lotto game “Interhraiko,” CardBox cards, the Happy English mobile application, and adapted Cambridge Young Learners English materials, which maintained students’ interest in learning and promoted the development of foreign language communicative competence. The results of the control stage confirmed the effectiveness of the developed system of exercises. The main provisions and conclusions of the study can be used by secondary school teachers, university lecturers, researchers, as well as in teacher professional development programs and the creation of educational and methodological materials.
