The dissertation is devoted to a comprehensive study of magazine periodicals of Ternopil region in 1991–2022 as a component of the regional media space of Ukraine and as a source for understanding the historical and journalistic process of the period of Independence. The study examines regional magazine publications in the interrelation of their historical, typological, formal-content, compositional-visual, and editorial characteristics. The relevance of the topic is determined by the absence of a holistic scholarly analysis of magazine periodicals of Ternopil region during the specified period, despite their significance in reflecting local socio-political, cultural, scientific, professional, religious, literary-artistic, and advertising-informational processes. The aim of the dissertation is to conduct a comprehensive study of magazine periodicals of Ternopil region as a systemic phenomenon in the interrelation of historical, typological, and formal-content characteristics. To achieve this aim, the theoretical foundations of the study of Ukrainian magazine periodicals have been analyzed; methodological approaches to the typologization of regional magazine publications have been outlined; the socio-historical factors of their functioning have been determined; the periodization of the development of magazines in Ternopil region has been proposed; and their typological features, content dominants, rubrication structure, compositional-visual parameters, and editorial factor have been characterized. The object of the study is magazine periodicals of Ternopil region in 1991–2022. The subject of the study is their typological characteristics, content dominants, compositional-visual parameters, and the editorial factor in the formation of magazine periodicals of Ternopil region. The empirical basis of the research comprises 152 magazine publications issued in Ternopil region during the period of Ukraine’s Independence. The chronological framework covers the period from 24 August 1991 to 24 February 2022, which makes it possible to trace the development of regional magazine periodicals from the proclamation of Ukraine’s Independence to the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The methodological basis of the dissertation consists of a set of general scientific and special research methods: analysis, synthesis, generalization, systematization, historical-chronological, typological, content analysis, comparative, structural-functional, and visual-communicative analysis. Their application made it possible to trace the stages of formation and development of magazine periodicals of Ternopil region, to classify publications according to purpose, readership, thematic orientation, and functional features, as well as to identify the specific nature of their content, rubrication, genre forms, visual organization, and editorial models. The dissertation substantiates that magazine periodicals of Ternopil region in 1991–2022 developed as a typologically diversified and functionally multidimensional segment of the regional media space. Their development was determined by the socio-political transformations of the Independence period, the democratization of the information space, the intensification of local cultural and identity-forming processes, the formation of scientific and educational institutions, and the development of civic, professional, and religious communities. The dissertation proposes an authorial periodization of the development of magazine publications in Ternopil region, which reflects the stages of formation, institutionalization, thematic expansion, modernization, and partial digitalization of regional magazine periodicals. The typologization of magazine publications of Ternopil region according to their purpose has been carried out. It has been established that they are represented by socio-political, scientific, popular science, popular, professional-practical, literary-artistic, religious, and advertising publications. The most numerous and structurally developed segment is constituted by scientific journals, the functioning of which is connected with the activities of higher education institutions, research establishments, and professional communities. Popular publications are oriented toward the leisure, informational, cultural, and practical needs of a broad audience; socio-political journals focus on the interpretation of state-building processes, civic position, local memory, and national identity; literary-artistic journals represent the creative potential of the region; religious publications reflect the spiritual life of the region; professional-practical journals address the applied needs of specific audiences; and advertising publications perform commercial and informational communication within the local space.
