The scientific work is a comprehensive study of the institute of economic sanctions in international law, revealing their legal nature, historical development and modern trends of application. Within the framework of the work, scientifically–theoretical results have been obtained that are significant both for the science of international law and for the law enforcement activities of states and international organizations. The relevance of the topic is outlined, related to the increasing role of economic sanctions in the system of international relations of the 21st century, their impact on global security and the international economy. The source base of the study consists of a wide range of sources. The dissertation uses the works of domestic and foreign scholars related to the researched problem. The normative basis of the study is formed by international legal customs and treaties, national normative–legal acts regulating the issues of application and imposition of economic sanctions, and international judicial practice. The author's understanding of the term "economic sanctions" in international law is given: it is a set of coercive measures of an economic nature introduced by states, international organizations or coalitions of states (for example, the EU, G7+Ukraine) in order to influence the behavior of a subject of international relations (state, government, non-state actor) that violates the norms of international law or threatens international peace and security; such measures are manifested in restrictions on trade, finance, investment or technology and are aimed at correcting behavior without the use of armed force.
