The dissertation research explores the theoretical basis and methodological tools for assessing the effectiveness of the formation, state and use of investment potential of enterprises of the agro-industrial complex. The evolution of the theory of investment and the essence of the investment potential of the enterprise are considered on the basis of scientific analysis based on modern theoretical and methodological approaches to economic development. It is substantiated that the investment potential of the enterprise initiates investment activity, reflects the capabilities of enterprises for investment development, implemented through available resources, personnel competence and readiness to effectively use them for investment purposes, profit and social effect. It is established that theoretical approaches are proposed for the formation of the investment potential of the enterprise in the following categories: resource, innovation, market, systemic, functional, economic and mathematical. These scientific approaches reveal unique aspects of investment potential and determine the strengths and limitations of the capabilities of enterprises.
