The dissertation research presents, for the first time, a comprehensive study of the representation of the history of the Polish–Lithuanian union process – from the Union of Krewo (1385) to the Union of Lublin (1569) – in the works of Polish historians active from the late 19th century until the outbreak of the Second World War. Particular emphasis is placed on examining the influence of historiographical theories and political ideologies on scholars’ interpretations of this historical issue. The first chapter, “Historiography, Sources, and Methodological Framework of the Study,” is devoted to the characterization of the corpus of source materials and historiography that formed the basis of the dissertation. It outlines the specific features of the research principles and methods employed in the study, which made it possible to accomplish its objectives. Thus, the dissertation analyzes the specific features of interpretations by Polish scholars active from the late 19th century to the outbreak of the Second World War of the history of the Polish–Lithuanian union – from the Union of Krewo in 1385 to the Union of Lublin in 1569 – and determines the place of these issues within Polish historical research. It examines the specificity of scholarly approaches to this topic depending on their affiliation with different historical schools, adherence to particular historiographical concepts, and sympathies toward specific political ideas.
