Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the cognitive-axiological study of the verbalization mechanisms of the CIVIL SOCIETY concept, which we interpret as a globalized mental construct representing the sphere of voluntary associations independent of state or corporate authority. In this work we define the globalized concept as a construct with an invariant core, whose central components (actantial structure and axiological oppositions) remain stable in media discourse despite ideological variability of the periphery. Another defining feature of the globalized concept is its linguistic supranationality, meaning it is verbalized consistently across different national varieties of English, rather than being confined to any single one. In contemporary Englishlanguage media discourse, which circulates as a form of mediated public communication, the concept under study manifests as a strategic discursive phenomenon organized around an actantial model comprising the Protagonist, the Antagonist, and the Victim. The mediatized concept CIVIL SOCIETY facilitates understanding of social processes, allowing us to trace how the media construct and disseminate ideological meanings. The cognitive-axiological aspect of this study reveals the connection between the concept verbalization and the value-based assessment of the actions of actants, whose notions of ―justice‖ or ―independence‖ become objects of ideological struggle.
