Essay

The dissertation is devoted to research into the rheological behaviour of dilute suspensions that are non-Newtonian due to disperse medium or conformation of dispersed particle. A dilute suspension of rigid spherical particles in non-linear, viscoelastic fluid appears as a second-order fluid with weakened non-Newtonian properties. The influence of electric field on a flow of a dilute suspension of rigid dielectric ellipsoids in Newtonian fluid results in a wide array of non-Newtonian properties: anomalous flow phenomena, anisotropy, viscoelasticity, non-linearity, and asymmetry of stress tensor. Constitutive equations of second-order anisotropic fluids are constructed. It is predicted that a dilute suspension of rigid ellipsoids of revolution in a second-order fluid would be non-linear, viscoelastic with enhanced non-Newtonian properties.
