Petrenko I. Linguistic and Acoustic Characteristics of Pausation in Modern English Lecture Discourse (Experimental Phonetic Research of Male and Female Speech in Didactic Sphere).

The dissertation deals with the analysis of linguistic and acoustic characteristics of pausation in Modern English lecture discourse. The paper suggests a functional classification of pauses as well as their linguistic and acoustic parameters elaborated in the course of experimental phonetic research. The role of prosody in speech delimitation and in the information structure of lectures is specified and the influence of a speech situation on the variability of prosodic organization of texts is revealed. The peculiarities of the prosodic structure of lectures in didactic sphere are proved to be dependent on lecture presentation types. Male and female prosodic patterns of delimitation are considered to be variant realizations of one and the same invariant intonation model of lecture discourse delimitation in didactic sphere.
