Gornyj M. Ukrainian intelligentsia of Kholmschyny and Pidlyashshya areas in the 20th century.

Study of the ways of formation, establishment, national selfawareness and activity of intelligencia. This process took place in two major stages: first stage - from early 20th century till 1944, when the homeland, and second stage - from 1945 till the end century, when a part of Ukrainians were re-settled from Kholmshchyna and Pidlyashshya areas to the Ukrainian SSR and a young generation of intelligencia grew up and formed among them. Policy of governmental structures of Russia and Poland in national affairs, activity of the Ukrainian national-cultural organizations and the place in these organizations of intelligensia, which under the conditions of prohibitio of the Ukrainian political, cultural-educational and religious organizations tried to develop Ukrainian national movement in these lands, as well as the process of adaptation of re-settled population to the political system of the USSR, bringing up intelligensia of a new generation and its contribution to the development of the Ukrainian stat e are examined. Quantitative and qualitative parameters of inteligensia stratum, factors influencing its formation and national self-awareness are traced. Contribution of separate individuals to the development of cultural-educational, religious and economic speres in the historical homeland, modern Ukrainian science, economy, medicine, culture and art is analyzed.
