Essay

The thesis is aimed at the experimental study of the influence of filler loading, filler particle size, shape and/or surface treatment on the thermoelastic properties of polymer composites in the ranges of reversible and irreversible deformations. Thermodynamic analysis of inelastic deformation above the yield point permits a quantitative characterization for the first time of energetic effects involved in the filler/polymer debonding process. The onset of inelastic deformation in carbon fiber/polycarbonate composites is tentatively attributed to a plastic flow of polymer matrix which is induced by local thermal effects of fiber fragmentation.
