Essay

The dissertation is dedicated to the elucidation of the role of concrete structure factors in the formation of high mechanical properties of rapidly quenched materials on the base of iron - Fe75B25 alloy and steels on the base of R6M5 and R18 trade marks, but also the surface layers, that were produced by plasma-detonation working. Such salient features of the structure and mechanical properties for rapidly quenched materials were revealed: 1) formation of new metastable phases, that don't attribute to slow cooling, with sufficiently simple crystallographic lattice and the dense packing; 2) high mechanical properties (hardness, plasticity and strength) for the powders and for the compact materials from the powders, particularly for materials, alloyed by boron; this explains by high value of the interaction energy of boron and surplus carbon with the defects of structure (dislocations, grain boundaries and interphase boundaries); 3) high microhardness of surface layers were produced by plasma-detonati on working connect with the forming of nanoscale martensite and with the saturation of surface by carbon. Key words: rapidly quenched materials, structure, strength, plasticity, microhardness, interphase boundaries.
