Essay

The thesis is devoted to the experimental studies of optical and structural properties of gold films and calculations of optical constants using two theories: the traditional and a new one. The Murman's formulas give reasonable result even for the thickest films. The error of optical constants determined from photometric data is large when the film thickness is less than 80A. The created installation and polarimetric method used allow to decrease the error to several percents. The new theory gives an overestimated value of refractive index in the spectral region l=24-1216A and an underestimated one in the infrared region. In some cases the formulae of new theory give solutions which contradict energy conservation law. The investigation of different formulae of light refraction law showed that the relations of tradition theory may be used in any spectral region, while the relation of new theory is erroneous. The classical size effect leads to the resonant increase of the refractive index, while quantum size effect causes the oscillations in the thickness dependencies of refraction index and absorption coefficient, Brewster's quasiangle, and imaginary part of complex dielectric constant.
