Essay

In freely suspended 5CB nemati liquid crystal films two stable textures can be observed: homeotropic and planar schlieren texture. It was found that orientation type depends on the film cooling rate from the isotropic phase to nematic one. The analysis shows that the realized structure depends on a defect created in the film during the cooling. Giant shape changing of a nematic liquid crystal drops, suspended in liquid isotropic polymer, under the action of external AC electric field was found. The shape of the deformed drop is elongated ellipsoidal at the dielectric interaction and spindle-like at the conductive one. The threshold field at which LC drop becomes unstable and starts to elongate was calculated and obtained results are in good agreement with experimental data. It was experimentally found that surface tension at the LC-polymer interface has nonmonotonic behavior with increasing the concentration of ions in the system. For the first time a hexagonal structure in a system of glycerol droplet s suspended in hybrid liquid crystal film was observed. Measured dependencies of the hexagonal lattice period vs. droplet size confirm our model of interaction between the glycerol droplets.
