Essay

Research subjects: genus Sideritis L. in flora of Ukraine and the South of Russia. Research objectives: carrying out revision and solution of problem of genus Sideritis L. taxonomical structure. Methods: classical, morpho-eco-geographical, anatomical, palinological, cytological, biochemical, chemotaxonomical, statistical, numerical taxonomy, etc. Theoretical and practical results: Taxonomical structure of genus Sideritis L., keys for definition, species descriptions and natural habitat map have been proposed for publication in "Flora of the Crimea" and "Flora of Ukraine". On the grounds of biochemical analyses results, raw materials (Sideritis inflorescences) have been recommended for use in medicine and food industry. The results can be used in nature conservation measures to preserve rare species and for Sideritis introduction. Materials on chemotaxonomy and chemical studies of plants are being used in students' research work. Novelty of introduced: The problem of genus Sideritis L. composition andstructure in the flora of the Crimea and Caucasus has been worked out. Two new species, three nomenclature combinations and a new system that combines Crimean-Caucasian taxons in natural series have been described. New characteristics in calyces and bracts indumentum have been exposed. Chemical structure of Sideritis plants has been determined, 42 substances have been identified. Implementation degree: Taxonomical structure of genus Sideritis L., keys for definition, species descriptions and natural habitat map have been proposed for publication in "Flora of the Crimea" and "Flora of Ukraine". 12 Sideritis species are introduced. Materials of dissertation are included in educational process. Effectiveness: improvement of methods of chemical analysis, use of progressive principles of higher plants taxonomy on example of genus Sideritis L. Sphere, sector of implementation: botany, taxonomy, biochemistry of plants, pharmacognosy.
