On the basis of the theory of stochastic processes the engineering methods for calculation of the basic contact characteristics and of sealing (at various modes - molecular, transitive and viscosity mode) of unlubricated piston seals are developed. Research equipment and technique of realization of experiment are developed. The equation for calculation of nominal contact pressure in piston seals is offered; the method of identification of the surface roughness characteristics of the piston seals on the experimentally certain duration of current of gas is developed. The influence of a surface roughness, module of elasticity of the piston seals and contact pressure on sealing is investigated. The experimental researches have confirmed high efficiency of the developed calculating methods.
