Essay

The thesis deals with the research on folkloristic work of the well-known scholar M.F.Sumtsov within the context of Ukrainian folkloristic during the above-mentioned period of time. The given thesis appears one of the first attempts to reveal the research heritage of M.Sumtsov as a folklorist. Considering the topic is not fully studied by the scholars the author tried to fill in this gap in the history of Ukrainian folkloristic science, as the problems put by M.F.Sumtsov are still topical even now. The work of M.Sumtsov is rather wide. His scientific interests embrace folkloristic, ethnography, literature studies, linguistics, region studies, archaeology, arts, etc. The theoretic basis of the research is composed by works of well-known Ukrainian scholars-folklorists - I.Aizenshtok, D.Bagaliy, F.Vovk, D.Doroshenko, L.Dunayevska, F.Kolessa, V.Petrov, Ya.Shust and others. While doing her research the author used historical-literature and comparative-typological methods which helped to compare texts of folklore samples taken by M.Sumtsov for thinking over and research. The parallel plot lines revealed by the scholar can be traced in the folklore of other Slavic peoples. The results of the research, main aspects of the thesis are shown in the ten papers by the author published in research journals and collections of papers of Kiev University professors and post-graduate students. They were also represented at the research conferences of the Institute of Philology of the University.
