Essay

The thesis analyses the process of formation and development of scientific thought in the field of research of folkloristics of Volyn of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century. Its formation is regarded in its interconnection with social-political and cultural conditions among which the important place was occupied by the problems of history of people, history of Ukraine and history of Volyn. Till the middle of the XIX century interest to folklore was spontaneous. With the activity of Z.Hodakovsky, A.Metlynsky, M.Kostomarov, T.Shevchenko and the section of ethnography of the Russian geographical society the research of verbal folk poetic art of Volyn has acquired scientific trend. Folkloristic-ethnographic expedition of the South-Western section of the Russian Geographical society stimulated the research of Volyn, created the foundation for fundamental study and generalization of the peculiarity of folklore, variety of genres and special features of their existence. Under conditions of rusification and polonisation of Volyn, scientists of S.-Petersburg, Moscow, Krakov, studying folklore-ethnographic memoranda of Volyn, introduced them into wide scientific use, furthered their future research. Workers of science and culture of Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Kremenets, particularly Olena Pchilka, B.Hrinchenko, Lesia Ukrainka, M.Korobka, V.Kaminsky, V.Kravchenko, F.Shteingel, M.Bilyashivsky, V.Moshkov with ethnographical studios (especially with folklore-ethrographical researches) confirmed the Ukrainian character of spiritual and material culture of Volyn, existence of various genres of folklore which were specific for Volyn region and for the whole Ukraine, made a great contribution to further developmentof folkloristics as science.
