Essay

The dissertation deals with the investigation of the electrochemical properties of refractory metals (Pt, Ti, Ta) in carbamide-containing melts. Mechanisms of electrode reactions proceeding at inert electrodes in carbamide-based melts as well as during electrodissolution of refractory metals and reduction of their ions have been proposed. The carbamide-NH4Cl melt can be used to electrodeposit platinum. The susceptibility of titanium and tantalum to passivation on a carbamide-chloride melt was utilized to develop a method for electropolishing metals.
