Essay

Elementary excitation spectra and thermodynamics of pure two-dimensional (2D) atomic cryocrystals and 2D cryocrystals with diatomic molecular substitutional impurities are investigated. Analytical expressions for the phonon spectra of close-packed atomic monolayers are obtained. Experimental data for the phonon spectra and heat capacities of rare gas monolayers are described quantitatively. Rotational dynamics of a molecular impurity in 2D atomic matrix is studied. The effects of translational-rotational interaction in the impurity rotational dynamics and in the heat capacity of a dilute solution of such impurities are obtained.
