Research object - Ukrainian folk tales about animals, aim - establishing the existence of mythological motives in Ukrainian folk tales about animals. Research methods: historical-genetic, structural-typological, structural-semiotic. A new scheme was created for genre structural analysis in two planes: synchronic and diachronic; 8 functions of characters in tales about animals were determined; 3 plot collision unfolding types and 3 functional capabilities of a character were offered; a set of semantic qualities and statuses for a character was established; mythological elements of a tale were explored by comparison of tale plots and myths; scientific conclusions were made about existence of totemic-mythological motives in tale genre. Sphere of application - philology, folklore, pedagogy.
