Essay

This dissertation investigates the interaction between oral creative traditions and individual written works through the example of Ukrainian verbal folklore and the poetry of V. Goloborodko. It reveals the multi-faceted relationship between folklore and literature, which is analysed through the transformation that V. Goloborodko's poetry brings to individual creative elements of Ukrainian folk narrative traditions, namely: novel poetic reproductions of plots, motifs, images and fairytale symbols; the folk riddle as the basis for the author's own riddle-metaphor; primitive man's taboo on names and the concealment of names in V. Goloborodko's texts; folk spells as a key to understanding poetic consciousness.
