Essay

Physical chemical fundamentals of SiC fibers synthesis during pyrolysis of hydrate cellulose fibers impregnated with silica as well as joined carbothermal synthesis of polycrystalline SiC fibers and SiC whiskers are in the focus of the thesis. Using methods of chemical analysis, TGA, XRD, SEM, TEM, IR-spectroscopy, Raman microspectroscopy there were investigated structure and composition of as-formed phases at various stages of the synthesis. Silicon oxycarbide formation during pyrolysis was found. Decomposition of silicon oxycarbide when heated leads to non-porous structure fibers formation, which is proper for high-strength fibers. Conditions and mechanism of SiC whiskers growth during carbothermal synthesis were determined. The results obtained represent a scientific base for high-strength SiC fibers engineering.
