The main results are: a local description of topological groups whose underlying topological spaces are inductive limits of countable families of their metrizable subspaces; characterizations of various combinatorial properties of free (abelian) topological groups over a Tychonoff space; every metrizable separable abelian group is a subgroup of a metrizable separable divisible abelian group.
