The paper deals with the development of phytoplankton, its spatial and temporal dynamics in the lotic-lentic complex "the river Seret - the Ternopil water reservoir - the subsidiary system - the river Seret". The principal stages of phytoplankton succession in the water reservoir have been defined from the end of the XIX century till nowadays; the primary production of phytoplankton has been investigated. The phyto-flow balance has been determined and the predominant role of autochthonous phytoplankton over the allochthonous has been ascertained in the river downstream the water reservoir.
