Essay

The object is genetic variability (polymorphism) of Gentoo penguin's DNA; the aim is to study molecular-genetic polymorphism in Gentoo populations; the methods of molecular biology were applied; the novelty is that molecular-genetic analysis of Gentoo penguins population was carried out for the first; results are the following: RAPD-analysis and the markers of microsatellites revealed the levels of polymorphism in Gentoo penguins at Petermann Island and from Livingston Island, we could confirm that these two populations belong to the same subspecies (Pygoscelis papua ellsworthi); sex identification of Gentoo penguins by PCR technique with specific primers has been carried out, female/male indexes were estimated; we determined the maximum telomere length of Gentoo penguins and the average length; the field is molecular genetics.
