The life, social and political activities of Hugo Kollataj (1750-1812), one of the prominent figures of Central and Eastern Europe of the second half of the 18th - beginning of the 19th centuries, are for the first time in Ukrainian historiography thoroughly described in the dissertation. The author analyzes biography of H.Kollataj by taking into consideration scholarly and epistolary heritage of this scholar and politician as well as new archival data and published sources, and defines main periods of Kollataj's life according to the latter's dominant spheres of interest. In particular, the author focuses on Kollataj's role in the reforming of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Rzecz Pospolita), and on his contribution to the development of education in the Commonwealth and later in the western part of the Russian empire at the turn of the 19th century. A special attention is paid to the scholarly heritage of Hugo Kollataj.
