Essay

The dissertation investigates the history of collecting, documenting and editing folktales in the region of Slobozhanshchyna during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This is the first attempt to classify and evaluate folktales gathered in this region. The time and place of collection, together with other characteristics of the texts, are verified. This allows the outlining of the main trends in recording and documentation. The prevailing models of text in documentation and in editorial practice are also outlined. The bibliography and indexes of the tale types are enriched. The dissertation is accompanied by indices of traditional tale types, data, information and bibliography.
