Essay

The dissertation deals with the solution of an actual science and technology problem of increasing the productivity of fine turning hardened steels with cutting tools equipped with cBN-based polycrystalline superhard material. The study has revised the regularities of the formation of undeformed chip cross-section in oblique turning with single-edged tools and the effect has been analyzed of the cutting conditions, cutting edge inclination, and the workpiece diameter on the mean chip thickness. The relations are given, which allow one to calculate the variation of the chip thickness along the cutting edge. A series of experimental examinations of force and temperature characteristics of cutting hardened steels by oblique single-edged tools equipped with cBN-based PSHM have been conducted. The effect of cutting condition regularities (the tool cutting edge inclination, cutting parameters, etc.) on the tool life, peak-to-valley height, structure and microhardness of the machined surface layer of the material has been studied. Based on the results of the study and experimental-industrial verification the recommendations have been formulated for practical applications of the results of the present study.
