Essay

We have cleared out the absolute chronology of Mesolithic sites of the region and proposed a generalized periodization scheme of three stages. The region was inhabited by bearers of four different economic types: hunter-gatherers of the Steppe and Forest-Steppe (North-Western Black Sea coastal area); fishers, hunters and gatherers of river banks (Danubian Gorges); hunters, gatherers of highlands (Eastern Adriatic Sea coastal area) and maritime fishers, gatherers, hunters (Aegean Greece). Neolithization has developed into two stages: the rapid spread of pioneers into new region and slow demic diffusion.
