Essay

The work is devoted to the theory of interaction in nematic colloidal systems. We have developed a representation of the pairwise interaction of particles in a nematic liquid crystal, in which there naturally appear an elastic charge, elastic multipoles, and their sorce - elastic charge density. The elastic charge is derived from the conservation of the mechanical torque. The elastic Coulomb-like coupling is found to be proportional to the scalar product of the two external torques. The range and conditions of the applicability of the pairwise approach to nematic collidal system are established. The problem of interaction between a colloid and a wall is solved by the mirror image method, which was modified for the colloidal nematostatics.
