Geo-mechanical system "working-pillar-face" in the mode of deformation is investigated. It is substantiated, that maximal sustainability of development openings is ensured when the width of protective pillar is 10 m. The objective laws of main roof rock failure in the mine face and advance speed of breakage face are established. It is ascertained, that a firm kernel of compaction is formed in the pillar body. This kernel is a tension concentrator and influences on sustainability of development open-ings. The transition from pillar to allwork mining method with recommended pa-rameters of pillars is justified. The economic effect of the 1200 m coal pillar is 13,9 mln. hrn. The coal losses in the protective pillars are decreased from 19 to 9%.
