The aim is the philosophic analysis of the concept of “ontology”, which is used in computer science, to define the constraints and the facilities of universal ontology as a program artefact. The theoretical results of the thesis and its novelty. The connection between computer science ontology and philosophical study of being is explored. It is ascertained that it is impossible to build universal computer science ontology because of the following reasons: insurmountable social nature of language, impossibility of complete knowledge formalization, impossibility of comprehensive reflection of the world as a set of discrete elements. The practical significance of the thesis – it allows to understand the meaning of the concept of “ontology” in computer science, reveals the connection between this concept and philosophical conceptions, that allows to use philosophical knowledge to solve theoretical and practical problems arisen in ontology engineering.
