Essay

This thesis, based on a wide range of sources and analysis of research literature, investigates the role of the Church in the socio-political life of Iceland from the tenth to the beginning of the thirteenth century. It characterizes Christianity and missionary activity in the country before and after the official conversion of the country in 999/1000. Formation of the institutional basis of the Icelandic Church (such as bishoprics and monasteries) and the specific mode of their connections with archbishoprics are considered. Particular features of teaching and education in bishoprics, monasteries and wealthy churches are presented. The thesis formulates a new hypothesis of the social status dynamics of the high ecclesiastics and analyses their influence (via written law) on the secular leaders of Iceland in the course of socio-political changes in the middle of the eleventh - the beginning of the thirteenth century.
