Essay

The nature of the effect of spectral shift to higher energies of the photoluminescence (PL) band from colloidal CdSe(Te)/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) occurred when drying the QD solution on a Si substrate is investigated. Two mechanisms of the effect are found: (1) compressive strains and (2) QD oxidation. It is found that conjugation of QDs with antibodies results in the increase of compressive strains in the QDs and acceleration of the QD oxidation as well as in the decrease of degree of QD surface defect passivation. y. It is revealed that thermal annealing at 350-480 K of colloidal CdSe QDs embedded in polymeric films of gelatin or polyvinyl alcohol results in reversible increase of the PL intensity and the shift of the PL bands to lower energies. The spectral shift is explained by an appearance of surface defect states, which act as the centers of radiative recombination.
