Essay

The thesis deals with influence of Lucius Cornelius Sulla's policy on Late Roman Republic's state changes. Its purpose is to show the social and political activity of dictator in the frameworks of crisis circumstances in the beginning of I century BC. The thesis touches upon the problems of dictator's legislation, his political and military career. It is analyzed the role of Sulla's diplomacy and propaganda in permission of internal and external conflicts. The study reveals the evidentiary materials of his active interference in the domestic politics of Greece' and Asia Minor's polises during the warfare with Mithridat VI Eupator. The author comes to the conclusion that Sulla's extraordinary dictatorship would have been impossible without appropriate state of Roman society. It is stressed that the total repressions, named as proscriptions, were not the main indication of his dictatorship. The study touches upon the impact of proscriptions at the Romans mass consciousness. It is considered that the beginning of large-scale civil and temple construction in Italian territory should be dated to the times of Sulla's dictatorship.
