Essay

The work yields new scientific knowledge on the process of control of alternate current electric arc furnaces. The comprehensive research into the processes taking place in EAF entitled us to be the first to show their correlations and develop an adequate model which gives a full description of the steel smelting in arc furnace and allows getting valid information on its stage, condition and major electrical, thermal and chemical characteristics at any time during the process. The unifying model was the basis for an algorithm of control of active power fed to the working chamber of EAF. This algorithm allows determining active power fed to the furnace during each stage which provides minimization of thermal loss and proper behavior of chemical reactions. To obtain the necessary value of active power, a system of movement control of electrodes was synthesized. This system is based upon dependence of instant value of active power of each phase on the arc's length of this phase.
