The dissertation is based on the wide complex of sources. It studies the reflection of the United States of America in the second half of the 19th century in the periodicals of the Russian Empire. The paper demonstrates reaction of the population of the south of the Russian Empire to the most significant events of the internal political life of the USA in the second half of the 19th century. Special attention is paid to the Civil War in America, Reconstruction, the competition between America and Russia for the world market and technical progress of the New World. American-Russian relations described on the pages of the periodicals from Odessa, Kishinev, Saint-Petersburg and Moscow are examined. The dissertation also deals with the reviews of social and economic life of the Americans by Odessa publicists. The attitude of the leading executives of the second half oа the 19th century to the problems of the United States of America.
