Essay

. Genomic region coding for 5S rRNA (5S rDNA) belongs to the class of tandemly arranged repeated elements and is present in all eukaryotic organisms. Organization of 5S rDNA in animals still remains poorly explored, especially in butterflies (Lepidoptera). Accordingly, molecular organization of 5S ribosomal DNA was studied in the group. Applying PCR, 5S rDNA repeated units were amplified from 16 species representing 7 families (Satyridae, Lycaenidae, Hesperiidae, Hadeninae, Pyraustidae, Geometridae, Pieridae, ). It was found the length of the repeated units ranges from 100 to 1000 bp.
