Essay

The object of research: the foreign missionary activity of the Russian Orthodox Church. The aim: the complex characterization of the foreign missionary activity of the Russian Orthodox Church and, as for example, its the East Asian missions. Methods: comparative-historical, historical-genetic, historical-systematic, historical-typological, problem-chronological, biographical, methods of synchronous and diachronic analysis, interdisciplinarity, contextualization, the combination of the micro and macro research strategies emphasizing the creative role of the subject (actor) of historical process. The scientific novelty: this is the first complex research in the historiography devoted to the foreign missionary activity of the Russian Orthodox Church; in particular, the author, for the first time, examines the history of the Russian Ecclesiastical Missions in the East Asia region in close connection with the influence of a number of subjective and objective factors (of civilization, government, church and personal) on the results of activity of the Orthodox missionaries. The practical significance: the scientific principles, the facts and findings can be used for the preparation of scientific papers, textbooks, programs and specialized courses on religious studies, missiology, the history of Christian missionary activity, the history of contacts between the Russian Empire and the East Asia region, cross-cultural communication East and West, etc. Scope of use: higher educational institutions.
