The thesis is devoted to study of the radar backscattering from the sea surface covered with breaking wind waves. Investigation is based on the results of field experimets that were carried out at the oceanographical platform.Relationships between millimeter wave radar cross-sections of the whitecaps and their geometrical parameters (length, area, azimuthal orientation) are determined. The model of quasispecular reflections from breaking waves is improved. Modification of this model is proposed in order to account for backscattering from the droplets tearing off the breaking wave crests. The analysis of the statistical properties of the both wave breaking and radar sea-spikes related to them was used to construct a novel approach to retrieval of wave breaking parameters from radar data.
